Since beauty products have a "period after opening" it can be hard to tell if something is truly expired.
In general:
Does it smell "off"? Fresh makeup doesn't have a smell. A drawer of bad makeup does. Can smell waxy (like crayons), or like out that's gone bad.
Is there a texture change? Things can get more liquidly, sticky, chunky, or have visible separation over time.
Products with active ingredients like SPF will have an expiry date printed
